That scratchy old pot may be destroying your tone! Worn carbon tracks don't improve even after a good clean. The only option is replacement and these, full-size, potentiometers bring things back to life nicely!

TIP: It's amazing how many times we read "helpful" tips advising people to use WD40 as a cleaner for guitar pots/switches. This is not a good idea. WD40 is a wax based insulator and will add to the resistance between contacts & the wiper/track interface in pots. Use a good quality contact cleaner.

If you're one of the many guitarists frustrated by the loss of treble when your volume control is reduced, the combination of a resistor and capacitor wired in parallel (known as "treble compensation" or "treble bleed" circuit) can really brighten things up. (see diagram)

TIP 2: 500K Ohm pots have a slightly "brighter" sound than 250K Ohm pots as they place less load on the pickup. Therefore, 500K pots are more commonly used with humbuckers. 250K pots are often used with single coils as they can temper some of the shrill brightness. However, both values are interchangeable and can used according to taste.
